Fed: overhaul of student funding needed, says VC

Poor students are the latest casualty of spiralling housing costs .. with a warning
that they'll be forced out unless the government boosts financial support.

IAN CHUBB .. vice-chancellor of the Australian National University .. says it's shameful
that young people are being hit with such high costs to go to university.

He says we can't afford to under-invest and under-provide for the development of our talent.

Professor CHUBB is calling for a thorough overhaul of financial support for students
.. including income and housing support .. and Austudy.

He says the current policy of restricting Austudy to those aged 25 or older will be
a silly outcome in the future educational environment.
