Qld: Gold Coast standoff ends with man being tasered

BRISBANE, April 26 AAP - Gold Coast police have ended a six-hour standoff by using
a stun gun to subdue a man who broke into a unit and assaulted two people.

The 30-year-old intruder allegedly got into the duplex on North Street, Southport about
6.30am (AEST) on Monday and assaulted a man and a woman.

They managed to flee the building and notify police.

"It is believed the occupants of the unit do not know the man," a police spokeswoman said.

The intruder refused to leave the home and police negotiators were called in.

But, after several hours of stalemate, officers entered the property about 12.30pm
(AEST) and tasered the man to subdue him.

"They were allegedly confronted by an aggressive and threatening man," a police spokesperson
said in a statement.

"A Taser was deployed and the man was arrested without incident."

The Surfers Paradise man has been charged with burglary, assault occasioning bodily
harm whilst armed, a second charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, one count of serious
assault and one count of obstruct police.

He is to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
