Fed: Sir Robert one of Austs most accomplished citizens: Downer

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER has described former Liberal senator and ambassador
to the US .. Sir ROBERT COTTON .. as one of Australia's most accomplished citizens.

Sir ROBERT died on Christmas Day in Sydney .. aged 91 .. after a long illness.

The former senator .. who once ran for the prime ministership against then-Labor PM
BEN CHIFLEY .. had a long and distinguished career in politics and business.

Mr DOWNER says Sir ROBERT made a strong and lasting personal contribution to Australia's
deep and enduring relationship with the United States.
