Vic: Brumby considers end to 24-hour bars

MELBOURNE, Feb 27 AAP - Melbourne bars with a 24-hour licence could have their operating
hours cut under measures the Victorian government is considering to fight binge drinking
and violence.

The government already has moved to increase the police presence in the city with a
new 50-member safer streets squad and has introduced powers to ban people from the CBD
for 24 hours.

Premier John Brumby is examining further measures to tackle the problem and said reducing
opening hours and restricting 24-hour access to alcohol would be considered.
