Fed: Government won't force centre on unwilling community

Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK says the government will not push a new immigrationdetention centre on an unwilling Brisbane community.

Mr RUDDOCK says it's expected the new centre proposed for the industrial suburb ofPinkenba, near Brisbane Airport, would mainly handle unauthorised air arrivals and thosewho overstay visas.

He says a key consideration is to minimise the substantial cost of housing and transportingdetainees.

But he says he won't push the proposal on an unwilling community.

Mr RUDDOCK says there are other offers if there is overwhelming community resistance to the plan.
