Kanawha library plans to launch electronic kiosk

The Kanawha County Public Library will launch the state's firstelectronic library kiosk from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday during thegrand opening of the Family Enrichment Center at 1501 Fifth Ave.

The free-standing booth features a walk-up computer with an easy-to-use touchscreen and a keyboard tough enough to withstand heavy useby the public, according to a news release.

"We're excited to be the first library system in the state toprovide a library without walls to our public," said MarilynSchroeder, assistant public services manager.

The kiosk will provide access to the Internet, the library'sonline catalog and reference desk, and local information andresources, according to the news release. It also will featureprinting and faxing capabilities.

Users will be charged a small fee for some of the services offeredthrough the kiosk, such as faxing, photocopying and printing.

"Electronic kiosks are used all over the country by a variety ofbusinesses, including banks, pharmacies, television stations andretail stores," Schroeder said.

"Kanawha County Public Library is joining many other librarysystems in providing library services in a nontraditional way topeople who do not have computers at home."
